GLTA President’s Address: “Be Nice to Each Other!”
Hello everyone, its amazing to look back over the last few months at all the amazing GLTA events. The European and North American schedule has been packed and not to be left out there have been a number of events in the Asia Pacific region, we truly are a great global organisation. Member clubs have done a wonderful job running events where participants from our diverse LGBTIQ+ community can come together and socialize and play the game we love. We must all thank the dedication and commitment of the volunteers that work so hard for players.
The board have been out and about at tournaments and have had the opportunity to chat with and get feedback from Tournament teams and players. We really appreciate the time people take to share their experiences. The overwhelmingly positive stories we hear are a testament to the spirt of our GLTA family.
Unfortunately, we also hear of examples of behaviour which is not in alignment with the values of our organisation. We should all keep in mind that the GLTA is a community volunteer organisation with the aim of creating a safe and inclusive environment where people can come together and form social connections. The tennis competition is the glue that binds us. The competitive nature of sport can sometime lead to us losing sight of this core value; this is to support each other even when that person it trying to beat us in a game. We all get upset at a perceived bad line call, we all make mistakes, we all have opinions and we sometimes get irritated by others. At that point of frustration, it’s important for us to refrain from actions or words (in person or online) that aim to denigrate, shame or bully people into giving us what we want in that moment, which unfortunately seems to be to win at all costs.
Be nice to each other & celebrate in style!
There is one truly objective measure our alignment with the values of the GLTA; after the match we sit down with the person or team that we have just lost to or have just won against and have a drink, converse and get to know them as a person outside of tennis. This is our responsibility to each other and will keep this organization strong. This challenge will be hard for many of us but it’s the opportunity that GLTA events give us to grow and connect with others. I have observed this tradition at Pinkster, Amsterdam (and I’m sure other events), the post-match drink is as something that makes that event impactful for participants.
As we head to the end of the year, there is still a lot happening. There are still more great tournaments around the world, it’s the last few chances to gain valuable points that may just help you score an invite to the GLTA Championships. In 2024 this special event will be held during the Australian Open in Melbourne. This is a great opportunity to soak up all the atmosphere of a Grand Slam city and we are planning some really big surprises for all those who qualify to experience special events at the Australian Open during the Championships, we couldn’t get courts at the AO sadly but Royal Park Tennis Club is only a short tram ride from Melbourne Park, so you will be in the heart of all the action. Stay tuned for a full event summary coming soon. The first invites will be sent in early November.
During October, Member Clubs will be voting in the GLTA elections for two members of the board. It is heartening to see such interest in running for the board and I wish everyone the best of luck. The elections are an opportunity for volunteers to put their hand up to serve the organisation so that it can continue to thrive and grow. Results will be announced in November.
Wishing everyone all the best for your endeavours on and off the court.
