MADRID, Spain
Madrid Tennis Open
The origins of madpoint go back to 1997, when a group of
friends met to play sports in Casa de Campo ( a huge natural
park very close to downtown where we play now). Some of
these players, the original founders of the club,
participated in the Amsterdam
'98 Gay Games. When they returned to
Madrid, they firmly intended to create a
lesbian/gay tennis club in Madrid.
The popularity of the group increased and they started to
meet regularly and in 2000 the first gay tennis
tournament in Spain was organised. Soon after, the group
organized an annual tournament called Torneo Día del Orgullo
(Gay Pride Tournament).
Today, madpoint is composed by more than 75 tennis players,
not only from Spain, but also from other countries like
Argentina, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Perú,
Portugal, Rumania, USA, United Kingdom, Venezuela etc. This
situation gives the club an international and multicultural
character.
madpoint is a member of the
European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation,
an international organization witch promotes gay and lesbian
sports, stimulates gays and lesbian to participate into
sports and promoting the creation of new sport groups and
sport events in Europe.
Some people seem to be impressed for how such a young club
has become this big and organize such a wonderful
tournament, but the truth is, we can't stop growing! In
2007, our international tournament -
Madrid
Tennis Open - was one of the tournaments that increased
more its number of participants in the GLTA and the madpoint
club almost doubled with new members. We started the year
receiving awards for best tournament director and volunteer
of the year, and nominated as best small tournament of the
year.... and finally, our tournament was honoured as the
first European G.L.T.A Masters Series event. Again in
2008 our tournament is nominated as best
small
tournament of the year.
Welcome to Madrid. Welcome to
madpoint.

MANCHESTER, England
Northern Aces Tennis
Northern Aces began life as part of the original
Team Manchester project,
which was designed to encourage more gay people into
sporting and other health related activities. A small group
of friends got together in 1999 and started playing tennis
on a regular weekly basis at the Sugden Sports Centre on the
outdoor courts in central Manchester.
News of the group started to spread and by 2002 a larger but
still informal group were playing at a number of different
venues across the region, arranging games in
Manchester, Wigan and Bolton. It was at this time
that the players were first successful in obtaining small
grants to support the running of the group.
In August 2005, Northern Aces organised its own first 3-day
international tournament. This proved a great success,
becoming an even bigger and better event in 2006, with over
sixty players (including representation from Belgium,
France, Spain and Switzerland) participating in both singles
and doubles competitions.
With the introduction of professional tennis coaching for
Northern Aces members and plans for additional sessions and
a greater number of social activities, the Group is growing
from strength to strength. Northern Aces can already boast
as being the largest GLTB tennis group outside
London, and is certainly one of the friendliest
in the UK.

ORLANDO, Florida
Orange Blossom Tennis
Association
In April
of 1992, Orange Blossom, founded by tennis pro Jeff Horn,
began play at Edgewater High school in College Park. The
group quickly outgrew the four hard courts but was able to
move to nearby Rollins College with its eight hard courts.
During the period at Rollins, the club formally proclaimed
all tennis players were welcomed and the club would not be
an exclusive gay organization.
After
another move, this time to Rosemont Country Club, our name
was adopted in respect to the only other gay recreational
organization in Orlando at
the time, the Orange Blossom Bowling Association. Horn hoped
as more recreational groups in Orlando
formed, they would united around the common name Orange
Blossom and make the name unique to gay recreational groups
in Orlando. Continued growth
forced a move to the day courts at the
Orlando Tennis Center. During this time the club
also witnessed the birth of The Smash, a monthly publication
mailed to over 300 members.
Presently,
the OBTA called Sanlando Tennis Center and its 25
tree-shaded hard courts home. Sanlando has also doubled as
the site of the Orange Blossom Tennis Championships every
Easter weekend since 2000.
OBTA uses
the tournament to raise money for several local charities;
thousands of dollars have been donated since the tournament
began.
The club
also participates in the annual Florida Cup tournament, a
round-robin format with 16 players competing in singles and
doubles against clubs from Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. OBTA won the trophy in 1997 and 2001.
