ABOUT THE GLTA

Thank you for your interest in the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA).

Gay tennis has been a steadily growing phenomenon beginning in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. A loosely organized circuit grew beginning in the 1980’s with tennis tournaments consisting of 30-60 players. The GLTA was formed on July 4, 1991 to provide rules and standards in addition to player rankings for all gay and lesbian tennis tournaments.

The Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance is the international organization that manages and sanctions the gay tennis circuit around the world. There are 40 gay and lesbian tennis clubs around the world that comprise the GLTA. With over 39 annual GLTA-sanctioned tournaments in the U.S, Canada, and Europe, the GLTA is the fastest growing gay sports organization. An estimated 5,500 players will take part in GLTA tournaments over the next year, and the number of tournaments and players grows each year.

The GLTA is an organization consisting of independent tennis organizations. An organization must be a GLTA member before its tournament can be sanctioned. Any tennis club wanting to become a GLTA Member Organization or any current GLTA Member Organization renewing its membership must complete and sign an application each calendar year. You can request an application by sending an email to the GLTA Secretary at secretary@glta.net.

We have provided some links in the top of this page for you to gain additional information about the GLTA.
